What is predictive maintenance vs preventive maintenance?

Semi truck fleet—predictive and preventive maintenance explained

Operators hear both terms in the same meeting. Predictive vs preventive maintenance is simpler than the acronyms suggest: one is calendar-based; the other is condition-based, powered by telemetry and context.

Preventive maintenance (PM)

PM follows intervals—hours, miles, or dates. It reduces surprise failures but can over-service easy units while under-serving hard ones. Service records and warranties still matter for what was already done.

Predictive maintenance

Predictive work uses proactive monitoring and telemetry, plus maintenance history, to estimate when a specific asset needs attention. An intelligence engine interprets device state so teams fix the right unit this week—not every unit on the same schedule.

Where they fit together

Most SMB operators need PM discipline and a ranked risk view. You do not throw away OEM intervals—you layer condition signals on top.
